Sonya Jehan is a Pakistani and French film actress who works predominantly in Hindi and Urdu cinema. Born in Karachi on 24 April 1980, she carries a significant cinematic lineage as the granddaughter of filmmaker Shaukat Hussain Rizvi and singer Noor Jehan. She is known for her work in international productions and acclaimed regional dramas.

Early life and education

Jehan was born in Karachi, Sindh, to Akbar Hussain Rizvi, a businessman, and Florence Rizvi, a French national. She later changed her surname from Rizvi to Jehan to honor her grandmother. Her brother is Sikander Rizvi, who works as a restaurateur and film actor.

She completed her early O-levels at the Centre of Advanced Studies in Karachi. Following this, she attended The Lyceum School for her A-Levels. She moved to London to pursue higher studies at the Central St Martins College of Art and Design. After receiving a bachelor's degree in designing, she returned to Pakistan in the same year.

Career

Jehan made her professional debut in 2005 with the romantic historical film Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story. She played the role of Mumtaz Mahal, a character who faces betrayal by the central figure. Although the film received mixed reviews from critics, Jehan earned praise for her performance. Her second film was the 2007 romantic drama Khoya Khoya Chand, directed by Sudhir Mishra.

This production featured Shiney Ahuja and focused on celebrity lifestyles within the 1950s film industry. The film received positive reviews and brought Jehan further critical acclaim. In 2010, she appeared in the Karan Johar-directed social drama My Name Is Khan alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. This project became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2010 and surpassed previous records with a high-value buy over.

Her first Hollywood production arrived in 2013 with the political thriller The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Based on a novel by Mohsin Hamid, the film cast her as a professor named Nadia. She acted alongside Riz Ahmed and Kate Hudson in this production. While critics gave the film mixed reviews, they specifically praised Jehan's performance.

In 2016, she starred in the musical drama Ho Mann Jahaan, which was directed by Asim Raza. She portrayed Sabina, an independent and outspoken woman, appearing alongside Mahira Khan and Sheheryar Munawar. The film became a major commercial success and earned Rs. 21.26 crore worldwide. It remains one of the highest-grossing Pakistani films in history.

Beyond her acting work, Jehan has served as a judge for a cooking show. She also manages the food and beverage operations for the restaurant Coalesce. Her family owns Cafe Flo, which is a French-themed restaurant located in Karachi.

Personal life

Jehan married Vivek Narain, an Indian banker, in 2005. The couple resides in Delhi, India, and they have two children named Noor and Nirvan. She and her husband own a members-only lifestyle club called The Quorum. This business maintains branches in both Mumbai and Gurgaon.

Awards and recognition

Her performance in the 2016 film Ho Mann Jahaan earned her a Nigar Award nomination. Specifically, she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the annual ceremony.
