Abdul Rehman Malik

Abdul Rehman Malik was a Pakistani politician and former Federal Investigation Agency officer. He served as the federal Interior Minister from 25 March 2008 until 16 March 2013.

Early life and education

Malik was born on 12 December 1951 in Sialkot, Punjab. He attended the University of Karachi where he completed his studies in 1973. During this year, he earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Statistics.

The University of Karachi later recognized his professional contributions to national security. In 2011, the institution conferred an honorary PhD upon him.

Career

His career in public service began in 1973 when he worked as an immigration officer for the National Alien Registration Authority (NARA). He later transitioned into various units within the intelligence and investigative community. This period allowed him to handle complex criminal cases and security matters.

During the 1980s, Malik joined the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to investigate internal security challenges. He focused on investigations related to foreign-sponsored terrorism. His professional reputation grew through his operational expertise and leadership. In 1993, Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto approved his appointment as the Additional Director General of the FIA.

Following the 2008 general elections, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani appointed him as Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior, Intelligence, and Narcotics Control. He was elevated to the position of Federal Minister for Interior on 27 April 2009. This role continued until 16 March 2013.

Malik managed significant internal security challenges during his tenure as minister. He worked on counter-terrorism measures and coordinated between civilian and law-enforcement institutions. He also addressed militancy while the Afghanistan conflict impacted the region. In October 2012, following the attack on Malala Yousafzai, Malik announced a reward of USD 1 million for information regarding Ehsanullah Ehsan. He also suggested that political reconciliation could be possible for militant leaders if they renounced violence.

Beyond his government roles, Malik authored four books. One such work is titled "Modi’s War Doctrine: Indian anti-Pakistan Syndrome." This book examines the policies of Narendra Modi and the resulting escalations in India-Pakistan hostilities.

Personal life

Malik passed away on 23 February 2022 at the age of 70. His death followed complications in his lungs caused by COVID-19. He was admitted to the intensive care unit at Shifa Medical Center on 1 February 2022, where he was placed on a ventilator.

Awards and recognition

The state granted Malik several high civil honours for his service. He received the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, which is Pakistan’s highest civilian award. He also earned the Sitara-e-Shujaat for his gallantry and distinguished service.
