Khawaja Muhammad Asif

Khawaja Muhammad Asif is a prominent Pakistani politician who currently serves as the Defence Minister of Pakistan. He represents the Pakistan Muslim League (N) and has held various high-level ministerial positions throughout his extensive political career. Since 1993, he has maintained a continuous presence in the National Assembly as a Member of the National Assembly from Sialkot.
Early life and education
Asif was born on 9 August 1949 in Sialkot, Punjab. He is a member of a Kashmiri family whose ancestors migrated from the Kashmir Valley to settle in Punjab many generations ago. His father, Khawaja Muhammad Safdar, was an influential politician who shaped his early environment. Asif attended Cadet College Hasan Abdal for his early schooling.
He pursued higher education at Government College University, Lahore, where he earned a bachelor's degree. In 1970, he obtained his L.L.B. degree from the University Law College, Lahore. He later moved to London to study economics and earned a master's degree from the London School of Economics in 1975.
Career
Asif began his professional life as a banker. He worked for several different banks located in the United Arab Emirates, including a position at the Abu Dhabi branch of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI). He lived in the UAE for many years before returning to Pakistan in 1991 following the death of his father. This return marked the beginning of his political journey when he was elected to the Senate of Pakistan during Nawaz Sharif's first term.
His legislative career in the National Assembly began in 1993 when he won the seat for constituency NA-110 in Sialkot. He secured re-election in 1997, 2002, and 2008. In the 2013 general election, he defeated Usman Dar by obtaining 92,848 votes. He later won the 2018 election from NA-73 with 116,957 votes and was re-elected in 2024 from NA-71 with 119,001 votes.
Asif has held numerous federal cabinet roles since 1997. During the second Nawaz Sharif government, he served as the chairman of the Privatization Commission of Pakistan. In 2008, he briefly held the portfolios of Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources and Minister for Sports within the Gillani ministry. Under the third Nawaz Sharif term from 2013 to 2017, he served as the Minister of Water and Power and later received the additional portfolio of Minister of Defence.
Following the resignation of Nawaz Sharif in 2017, Asif was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs in the cabinet of Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. He held this position until April 2018. Since 2022, he has served as the Defence Minister during the Shehbaz Sharif administrations. He also assumed the additional role of Minister of Aviation on 11 March 2024.
In May 2019, he became the Parliamentary Leader of the PML-N in the National Assembly. During the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict, he made several public statements regarding regional tensions and military actions. He addressed the National Assembly on 8 May 2025 to discuss drone incursions and military decisions during cross-border strikes.
Personal life
Asif is a father to one son and three daughters. He spent significant time living in the United Arab Emirates before his return to Pakistan. His political involvement was heavily influenced by his father's legacy in the region.
Awards and recognition
The Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations awarded him an honorary doctorate degree in international relations in 2017. Additionally, he was featured on a list of the "top handsome lawmakers of Pakistan" in 2019.
