Sajid Mir

Sajid Mir is a Pakistani politician and Islamic scholar who held the position of second emir of Markazi Jamiat Ahle Hadith. He served as a member of the Senate of Pakistan while representing the Pakistan Muslim League (N).
Early life and education
Mir was born on 2 October 1938 in Sialkot, Punjab, Pakistan. He belonged to a religious Kashmiri family that included the prominent scholar Muhammad Ibrahim Mir Sialkoti. After completing his initial schooling, he pursued higher education at the University of the Punjab. He earned a master's degree in English literature in 1960. Later, he obtained a master's degree in Islamic studies from the same institution in 1969.
Career
Mir began his political journey as a candidate for the Pakistan Muslim League (N). He served in the Senate of Pakistan during two distinct periods, specifically from 1994 to 2000 and again from 2003 to 2025. In March 2009, he secured a seat in the Senate through a reserved seat designated for ulema and technocrats. While serving in the upper house, he acted as the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology.
His legislative work extended to several other parliamentary bodies. He was a member of the committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, as well as the Functional Committee on Government Assurances. Mir also served on the Rules of Procedures and Privileges committee. He led a specific group that drafted a code of conduct intended to promote inter-sectarian harmony within Pakistan. His diplomatic efforts helped strengthen bilateral ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
Mir held significant leadership roles within religious organizations. He became the Emir of Markazi Jamiat Ahle Hadith in March 2018. In September 2020, he attended the All Parties Conference where the JAH joined ten other parties to form the Pakistan Democratic Movement. He appeared at many public gatherings and powershows for the PDM. Following contact from Nawaz Sharif in February 2021, Mir received a spot on the PML-N ticket for the Senate elections. He won his seat in an unopposed election.
As a scholar, he authored and translated various works in English and Urdu. His academic focus centered on Islamic thought, comparative religion, and Hadith studies. He also worked as a university teacher during his career.
Personal life
Mir died at the age of 86 on 3 May 2025. A heart attack caused his death. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that Mir consistently raised his voice against sectarianism and extremism.
