Al Mahmud

Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud is a celebrated Bangladeshi poet, novelist, and short-story writer. He remains recognized as one of the greatest Bengali poets to emerge during the 20th century.

Early life and education

Al Mahmud was born on 11 July 1936 at Morail Village within the Brahmanbaria District. He belonged to a Bengali Muslim Zamindar family that held the hereditary title of Mir. His ancestors migrated to the Indian Subcontinent to preach Islam. His father, Mir Abdur Rab, and his mother, Raushan Ara Mir, were cousins. The family lineage included his grandfather, Mir Abdul Wahhab Mullah, who served as a Mullah and Zamindar in the Brahmanbaria district. Because he was a teacher and cleric in his local village school, Mir Abdul Wahhab influenced the region. Al Mahmud spent his childhood and his secondary education days in this village near Brahmanbaria town.

Career

Mahmud began his professional journey as a journalist. He achieved widespread recognition in 1963 after he published Lok Lokantor. Following this success, he penned Kaler Kalosh in 1966 and Sonali Kabin in 1973. He also wrote Mayabi Porda Dule Otho in 1976. His poetic collections include Arobbo Rojonir Rajhash, Bakhtiyarer Ghora, and Nodir Bhitorer Nodi. Beyond poetry, he authored short stories, novels, and essays such as Pankourir Rakta and Upamohadesh.

During the 1950s, he was among the Bengali poets who used their writing to address the Bengali language movement. He wrote about nationalism, political repression, and the struggle against the West Pakistani government. In 1971, he traveled to India to help build public opinion in favor of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. After the war ended, he served as the assistant editor for The Daily Ganakantha. He spent one year in jail during the regime of the Awami League government.

Al Mahmud joined the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 1975. He worked there until he retired in 1993 as the director of the academy. His 1973 work, Shonali Kabin, is considered a landmark of Bengali poetry. Philosopher Sibnarayan Ray noted that Al Mahmud possesses an extraordinary gift for discrete levels of experience. Ray observed that his secularism appears naturally within his metaphors and themes.
