Abdullah Shafique

Abdullah Shafique is a Pakistani international cricketer who represents the national team across all formats. He operates as a right-handed top-order batter and competes for the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League.

Early life and education

Shafique was born in Sialkot on 20 November 1999 into a Punjabi Muslim Gujjar family. His father, Shafiq Ahmed, moved to Dubai in 1991 to pursue a career as a professional cricketer and coach. Because his father has coached at GEMS Modern Academy in Dubai since 2003, Abdullah began his cricket training at the age of 3. This mentorship helped him reach the Pakistan under-19 team by the age of 16.

His family has a strong connection to international sports. His uncle, Arshad Ali, played international cricket for the United Arab Emirates.

Career

Shafique entered the professional circuit when Multan Sultans bought him during the 2018 Pakistan Super League players draft, though he did not play in that competition. He made his first-class debut for Central Punjab in December 2019 during the 2019–20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. He scored 133 runs in that match. In September 2020, he debuted in the Twenty20 format for Central Punjab and scored 102 not out. These performances made him the first Pakistani batsman to score a century on both his first-class and T20 debuts.

His international journey began with a Twenty20 International debut against Zimbabwe on 10 November 2020. After several squad selections for tours to New Zealand, South Africa, and England, he earned his Test debut on 26 November 2021 against Bangladesh. During the February 2022 series against Australia, he scored his maiden Test century in the fourth innings of the first match. He accumulated 397 runs across those three Test matches.

Shafique achieved a historic milestone in July 2022 when he scored 160* in the fourth innings of a Test match in Galle to win against Sri Lanka. He later made his ODI debut on 21 August 2022 against the Netherlands. In December 2022, he recorded his third Test hundred against England at Rawalpindi.

The 2023 World Cup provided another significant platform for his talents. He debuted in the tournament against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad, India, where he scored 113 runs off 103 balls. This innings helped Pakistan break the record for the highest successful run chase in a World Cup match. He followed this with 64 runs against Australia on 20 October 2023 and 58 runs against Afghanistan on 23 October 2023.

Personal life

Outside of his cricket career, Abdullah enjoys music. He is a singer and plays the guitar. Various videos of him singing different songs have gone viral online.
