politician
Asma Arbab Alamgir is a Pakistani politician representing the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). She currently serves as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan. Her political career includes significant roles within the federal government and party leadership.
Early life and education
Asma Alamgir was born on 9 July 1965. She belongs to the influential Jhagra family of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Regarding her academic background, she completed her graduation in Law and Economics. This educational foundation supported her later work regarding constitutional rights for women.
She is married to Dr. Arbab Alamgir Khan. He is a prominent figure from the powerful Arbab political family of Peshawar. Her father-in-law was Arbab Jehangir Khan, who served as the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Career
Alamgir entered her parliamentary career during the 2008 Pakistani general election. She secured a seat in the National Assembly on a reserved seat for women from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. During this first tenure, she held several high-level positions within the PPP and the federal government.
In April 2010, she was appointed as the Advisor to the Federal Minister for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON). She worked on policy matters regarding tribal areas during a period of counter-terrorism operations. Additionally, she became the President of the PPP Women Wing in February 2010. In this role, she focused on mobilizing female voters and addressing women's issues.
Her political journey faced challenges in the 2018 general election. She contested the NA-27 (Peshawar-I) seat but was unsuccessful. She received 24,002 votes during that contest. In November 2023, she resigned from her position as Central Deputy Information Secretary due to internal party disagreements, though she remained with the PPP.
Alamgir returned to the National Assembly following the 2024 Pakistani general election. She took her oath as a member on 15 March 2024. Although the Election Commission of Pakistan briefly suspended her membership in May 2024 due to a Supreme Court ruling, she remains an active member representing the PPP. Her current responsibilities include serving on the Finance Committee and the Standing Committee on Social Welfare & Special Education.
In 2017, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed a reference against her and her husband. The case alleged they held assets worth approximately PKR 332 million that were disproportionate to their income. They denied these charges—calling them political victimization—and maintained that their properties in Islamabad, Peshawar, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom were ancestral.

Asma Arbab Alamgir lives in Peshawar with her family. She is the wife of Dr. Arbab Alamgir Khan, who served as the Federal Minister for Communications from 2008 to 2013. The couple has three sons, including Arbab Zarak Khan.
