Shujaat Hussain
statesperson, entrepreneur, politician
Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain is a Pakistani politician who served as the 14th prime minister of Pakistan. He has held the position of party president for the PML(Q) since 2003.
Early life and education
Hussain was born on 27 January 1946 in the Gujrat District of Punjab. He belongs to a Punjabi Jat family of the Warraich clan. His ancestors lived in rural Gujrat and lacked an initial political background. His father, Zahoor Elahi, worked in the Punjab Police before he quit the service to establish a cotton mill. Although the family lost a mill during the Indian partition, they re-established it in Gujrat after Pakistan was founded in 1947.
Hussain attended public schools in Gujrat before he matriculated. He later enrolled at Forman Christian College University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1965. Following this, he pursued an MA in Industrial Management in the UK. Upon his return to Pakistan in 1969, he joined the family industrial conglomerate. This business included various units in textiles, sugar, flour milling and agricultural farms.
Career
Hussain entered national politics following the assassination of his father. He became a Member of Parliament in 1981 and subsequently joined the financial department of the Punjab government. He successfully contested the non-partisan 1985 general elections. During the government of Prime Minister Muhammad Junejo, he served as the minister of industry until 1988. He also held additional portfolios for the Ministry of Information and Mass-media Broadcasting in 1986 and the Ministry of Defence Production from 1987 to 1988.
Between 1988 and 1990, Hussain became an influential conservative figure within the Islamic Democratic Alliance (IDA). He headed the Parliamentary Party of Joint Opposition (PPJO) in the National Assembly during this period. In 1993, he joined the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) under Nawaz Sharif. He served as the 26th Interior minister in two non-consecutive terms from 1990 to 1993 and from 1997 to 1999.
Political shifts occurred after the 1999 coup. Hussain defected from Nawaz Sharif to support Pervez Musharraf and became a member of the new PML-Q. He assumed the presidency of the PML(Q) in January 2003 after Mian Muhammad Azhar resigned. On 29 June 2004, he was elected as Prime Minister. This appointment occurred because his nominee, Shaukat Aziz, could not be elected as he was a member of the Senate. Hussain held the office until 23 August 2004, when he handed over the premiership to Shaukat Aziz.
Hussain's political journey included a period of imprisonment in 1994 during the second tenure of Bhutto. He was detained in cases filed by the Federal Investigation Agency. Following the 2008 elections, his party acted as a major ally to the Pakistan Peoples Party under President Asif Ali Zardari.
Personal life
Hussain is the eldest son of Chaudhry Zahoor Ilahi. He has two brothers, Wajahat Hussain and Shafaat Hussain, along with six sisters. His brother, Wajahat Hussain, was also elected to the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab. Several of his siblings are connected to political figures through marriage. For example, his sister Qaisra Elahi is married to his cousin, Pervez Elahi, who served as Chief Minister of Punjab in 2002 and 2022.
His other sisters include Naaz Elahi, who is married to Tahir Sadiq Khan, and Sumaira Elahi, who remains active in politics. One sister is married to Riaz Asghar Chaudhry, while another is married to Javaid Akhtar Chattha. These family connections maintain the Hussain family's influence within national politics.
