Early life and education
Shah was born on August 14, 1964, in Lyari, Karachi. His childhood was defined by extreme hardship because he lived on the streets as a homeless person. He worked as a labourer to earn money during these difficult years. To develop his skills, Shah trained himself for boxing on the streets. He used garbage bags as makeshift punching bags while he practiced his technique.
Career
The boxer achieved his first major success at the 1984 South Asian Games in Kathmandu. He won a gold medal there alongside Asghar Ali, Ilyas Ahmed and Muhammad Yousaf. During the 1987 edition of the Games in Kolkata, officials adjudged him the best boxer. He maintained a rare prominence as the best boxer of Asia from 1980 to 1988. This period of dominance remains a significant achievement for any Pakistani pugilist.
Shah competed in the Middleweight division at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. After receiving a bye in the first round, he defeated Martín Amarillas with a score of 3-2. He then secured a victory against Serge Kabongo with a 5-0 score. Following this, he defeated Zoltán Füzesy by a margin of 3-2. Although he lost to Egerton Marcus with a score of 1-4, he still shared the podium with Kenya's Chris Sande. This achievement earned him a bronze medal in the 71–75 kg category.
His career includes five gold medals from the South Asian Games. He is one of only three Pakistanis to win individual Olympic medals, alongside Muhammad Bashir and Arshad Nadeem. A biopic titled Shah was released on 14 August 2015 to chronicle his life. The film follows his rise to fame as an Asian Boxing Champion and his eventual migration to Japan.
Personal life
Shah eventually moved to Japan after his professional boxing career concluded. He settled there to pursue new opportunities for his family. His son, Shah Hussain Shah, learned judo in Japan and went on to represent Pakistan at the international level. The biographical film depicts his journey from a poverty-stricken childhood to his life as a coach for Japanese boxers.
