Nadira was a prominent Pakistani film actress and dancer who worked in Punjabi and Urdu cinema. She gained widespread popularity during her career between 1986 and 1995. Known as "The White Rose," she became a celebrated figure in Lollywood due to her graceful persona.
Early life and education
Nadira was born as Malika Farah on 22 November 1968 in Lahore. She grew up in this city before entering the film industry. Little is recorded regarding her formal schooling during these early years.
Career
Director Yunus Malik introduced Nadira to the Pakistani film industry by offering her a role in his 1986 production, Aakhri Jang. Although Aakhri Jang served as her acting debut, the Punjabi film Nishan was released earlier. Because of this release order, Nishan is considered her first appearance on record. She quickly established herself as a talented performer who could handle intense and dramatic roles.
Her filmography includes 52 films in total. Out of these, she appeared in 2 Urdu films, 35 Punjabi films, 2 Pashto films, and 14 double version films. She frequently worked alongside actors like Sultan Rahi, Ghulam Mohiuddin, and Ismael Shah. One of her most significant performances occurred in the film Nachay Nagin, where she played a serpent. This role brought her immense fame and established her reputation for playing such characters in films like Nachay Jogi and Jadoo Garni.
Nadira achieved massive commercial success throughout her eight-year career. Her films reached various milestones, including 25 Silver jubilee hits and 4 diamond jubilee successes. The film Aakhri Jang was particularly successful as it enjoyed a golden jubilee. She also became well known for her dancing skills, which complemented her romantic roles. In the film Meri Aavaz, she performed two songs that gained significant popularity.
Her extensive list of credits includes several notable titles from the late 1980s. These films include Puttar Sheran Day (1986), Baadal (1986), Commando Action (1988), and Maula Bakhsh (1988). She also starred in Mafroor (1988), Miss Allah Rakhi (1989), 30 Mar Khan (1989), and Zakhmi Aurat (1989). Later, she appeared in the 1993 film Jagga Daku.
Personal life
In 1993, Nadira married Malik Ijaz Hussain, who worked as a gold merchant. The couple had two children, a daughter named Rimsha Rubab and a son named Haider Ali. She chose to retire from the entertainment industry following her marriage.
Tragedy struck on 6 August 1995 when she was fatally shot in Lahore. While she and her husband were traveling home from a restaurant, unidentified assailants stopped their car near Gulberg. The robbers reportedly attempted to snatch the car keys from her husband. During the ensuing struggle, gunfire broke out and a bullet struck Nadira in the neck. Although accusations were made against her husband regarding the incident, the investigation remained inconclusive.
