Noor Alam Khan is a Pakistani politician who serves as a member of the National Assembly. He has held seats in the assembly across multiple terms representing various political parties. His career includes roles within the Pakistan Peoples Party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F).
Early life and education
Noor Alam Khan was born on October 12, 1972, in the village of Haryana Payan. This village is located near Peshawar in Pakistan. He pursued higher education at the University of the Punjab. He completed his BA degree and graduated from the institution in 2002.
His family has a history in regional politics. His uncle, Haji Muhammad Nawaz, was elected as a member of the provincial assembly in 1988.
Career
Khan began his parliamentary career during the 2008 Pakistani general election. He ran as a candidate for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) from Constituency NA-3 (Peshawar-III). He secured 27,038 votes to defeat Babar of the Awami National Party. During this tenure, he served as the federal parliamentary secretary for commerce.
He contested the 2013 general election from the same constituency. However, he finished in fourth place after obtaining 22,045 votes. He remained affiliated with the PPP until 2018.
In the 2018 Pakistani general election, Khan joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). He was elected to the National Assembly from Constituency NA-27 (Peshawar-I). He received 71,158 votes and defeated Haji Ghulam Ali of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal. His term lasted until August 2023.
Khan became a dissident member of the ruling PTI during the political shifts of 2022. He was among 14 members who received show-cause notices from the party for allying with the opposition. These actions occurred before the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan. Following his dissent, he was elected as the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee in 2022.
He later transitioned to the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) (JUI-F). On December 23, 2023, he officially decided to join the party. In the 2024 Pakistani general election, he ran as a JUI(F) candidate for constituency NA-28 Peshawar-I. He received 59,78 votes and defeated Sajid Nawaz, an independent candidate supported by the PTI.
His legislative interests include several key sectors. These areas are Foreign Affairs, Health, Defense, and Communication. He has also held memberships in Standing Committees on Parliamentary Affairs, States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON), and Industries and Production.
Personal life
Khan is a landlord by occupation. His primary source of income is derived from agriculture. In 2012, he was reported to be the richest known member of the National Assembly. At that time, his declared assets exceeded PKR 32 billion. These assets included 200 acres of land in Peshawar, gold ornaments worth PKR 11.6 million, two vehicles and a house.
He is married and has a family consisting of one daughter and two sons. His personal interests include hunting and horseback riding. He has traveled internationally to the USA, UK, Germany, Kenya, and the UAE.
