Kumail Nanjiani

Kumail Ali Nanjiani is a Pakistani and American stand-up comedian, actor, producer, and screenwriter. He gained widespread recognition for his work in television and film, including his role in the HBO series Silicon Valley. In 2018, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Early life and education
Nanjiani was born on May 2, 1978, in Karachi. He is the first of two sons born to Shabana and Aijaz Nanjiani, who are a Sindhi, Shia Muslim couple. His second cousin is the BBC radio presenter Shereen Nanjiani.
During his childhood, he attended St. Michael's Convent School for his O-Levels. He later graduated from Karachi Grammar School to complete his A-Levels, where he was a class-fellow of Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy. At age 18, he moved to the United States to attend Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. He graduated in 2001 with a double major in philosophy and computer science. After finishing his studies, he moved to Chicago to begin performing stand-up comedy at open-mic events.
Career
Nanjiani wrote and staged an original autobiographical one-man show in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles in 2007. He continued to perform stand-up after moving to New York, making appearances on shows like The Colbert Report and Michael & Michael Have Issues. In 2009, he performed at the Just for Laughs comedy festival. He also hosted a video game-themed podcast called The Indoor Kids starting in 2011 with Ali Baker. After Baker left the show, Nanjiani began hosting the podcast with his wife, Emily V. Gordon.
His breakthrough role arrived in April 2014 when he began playing Dinesh in the HBO sitcom Silicon Valley. He has appeared in various series, including Franklin & Bash, Newsreaders, Portlandia, and The Boys. His voice acting credits include Prismo on Adventure Time and Kingo on the animated anthology series What If...?. In 2014, he also co-hosted the Comedy Central show The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail.
In 2017, Nanjiani starred in the romantic comedy film The Big Sick, which he co-wrote with Gordon. The film earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He also appeared as Kingo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Eternals, which was released on November 5, 2021. In 2022, he took the lead role of Somen "Steve" Banerjee in the Hulu miniseries Welcome to Chippendales.
Nanjiani's recent work includes a role in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi and the film Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. He also wrote and produced the Apple TV+ anthology series Little America, which premiered in January 2020. In 2023, he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
Personal life
Nanjiani is married to Emily V. Gordon. In March 2020, the couple launched a podcast titled Staying In with Emily and Kumail to chronicle their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The series has been described by GQ as endearing and hilarious.
Awards and recognition
His accolades include a Screen Actors Guild Award. He has received nominations for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and two Emmy Awards. In 2019, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his work on The Twilight Zone.
Nanjiani was also recognized by the Film Independent Spirit Awards. In 2018, he was invited to join the actors and writers branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
