Hamid Ali Khan
singer
Ustad Hamid Ali Khan is a Pakistani classical singer who specializes in ghazal and classical singing. He represents the Patiala gharana through his unique vocal style and musical expertise.
Early life and education
Hamid Ali Khan was born in 1953 in Lahore. He is the son of Ustad Akhtar Hussein Khan, who was a notable figure in music. As the youngest brother of Bade Fateh Ali Khan and Amanat Ali Khan, he grew up surrounded by musical excellence. He inherits an unrestrained singing style from his father—a trait that defines his approach to the Patiala tradition.
Career
The singer serves as an exponent of both ghazal and classical music. He has released several records throughout his professional life. While many newer singers like Shafqat Amanat Ali have moved away from the classical Patiala style, Hamid Ali Khan remains a prominent figure in this tradition. He maintains an unfaltering sense of raags and rhythm to create his own musical world.
His career involves extensive collaboration with international artists. He has performed with many famous musicians, including several artists from India. In the United Kingdom, he works with various UK-based performers. Recent collaborations include Partha Sarathi Mukherjee on the tabla and Fida Hussain on the harmonium.
In 2016, he shared the stage with his brother Bade Fateh Ali Khan during a live concert. This performance brought two legends of the Patiala gharana together for an audience. His mastery over melodies and voice control continues to define his professional reputation.
Personal life
Hamid Ali Khan has three sons named Nayab Ali Khan, Wali Hamid Ali Khan, and Inam Ali Khan. These three men follow their father's musical path by performing together in a band called RagaBoyz. One son, Wali Hamid Ali Khan, also pursues acting through his serial Kaisi Aurat Hoon Main.
Social media once spread false reports regarding his health. On 1 August 2019, fake news claimed that the singer had passed away. His son, Wali Hamid Ali Khan, quickly clarified that Hamid Ali Khan is absolutely fine.
Awards and recognition
The singer has received high honors from the state. He won the Pride of Performance Award in 2007, following in the footsteps of his brother Amanat Ali Khan. In 2010, the Government of Pakistan presented him with the Sitara-i-Imtiaz Award. He remains one of the few Pakistani artists to win a Presidential Award more than once.
His international reputation is also well established. During a tour of India in 2007, he received several awards for lifetime achievement in classical music. These honors recognize his long-standing dedication to his craft.
