Afshan Ahmed is a Pakistani singer who gained recognition through her performances on radio and television. She is widely known for singing tracks such as "Dosti Aisa Naata" and "Meray Bachpan Ke Din".
Early life and education
Afshan Ahmed was born on 22 September 1966. Her family migrated from India to Pakistan in 1965. Because her mother, Asma Ahmed, served as a singer at All India Radio, music was a central part of her upbringing. Asma Ahmed performed playback singing for films during the 1970s and worked alongside singer Akhlaq Ahmed.
Ahmed began her musical journey at a young age by performing in a children's television program titled Hamari Shaam. She later joined several shows for children that were hosted by musician Sohail Rana. These programs included Kaliyon Ki Mala and Hum Sooraj Chand Sitaray. During this period, she received appreciation for her rendition of the song "Dosti Aisa Naata".
Career
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Ahmed recorded numerous songs for Pakistan Television. One of her most popular tracks from this era is the wedding song "Babula Way Lay Jayn Na Loag Mujk Ko", which features music by Niaz Ahmed. At age 16, she appeared in a Binaca toothpaste commercial in 1982.
Her discography includes diverse collaborations and compositions. She sang "Meray Bachpan kay Din" with Mohammed Ali Shehki and performed "Dil Teri Haveli Hay" with Akhlaq Ahmed. Other notable works include "Bojhal Bojhal Palkon Par" with Alamgir and "Door Kahin Jheelon Se Koi", which features music by Alamgir. The song "Dosti Aisa Naata" was composed by Sohail Rana.
Ahmed continues to participate in various public events and cultural initiatives. She performed at the Children's literature Festival in 2016, where she sang "Gaao mere Sung", "Jeevey, Jeevey Pakistan" and "Yeh Des Hamara Hai". During this same performance, she revisited her classic song "Dosti Aisa Naata Jo Sone Se Bhi Mehnga".
In 2018, she served as a panel judge for the Obhartay Sitaray Competition, an event held by The Citizens Foundation. She also appeared at the EMI event on 23 July 2019 to honor classical musicians and singers. This specific event was organized by Tanveer Afridi and the director of public relations of EMI Pakistan to remember Nisar Bazmi.
On 28 November 2019, she performed at the Pakistan Mega Fashion Film and Art Award Show. This show took place at Flatties Hotel and was organized by Israr Hussain. Later, on 15 November 2022, she participated in an initiative by the Endowment Fund Trust for Preservation of the Heritage of Sindh. This work aims to restore cultural heritage within the region.
