Early life and education
Butt was born in Denmark on 18 October 1989 to a Kashmiri family from Lahore, Punjab. He holds Canadian citizenship because his father moved to Canada at a young age before eventually shifting to Denmark. During his youth in Denmark, he attended school with Hassan Bashir, who later became his teammate on the national team.
Career
Butt began his football career at Hellerup IK when he joined the club at age 14. He made his senior debut for the side in 2007 while playing in the Danish 1st division at age 18. After this period, he moved to the 2nd division club BK Skjold in 2010. He played 17 games that season to help the club avoid relegation before moving to Skjold Birkerød the following year.
He later joined BK Glostrup Albertslund and eventually rose to become the club captain. In August 2014, Butt signed a 6-month contract with Brønshøj Boldklub. He appeared in one DBU Cup match for them, which resulted in a 9–1 away victory against Blovstrød.
Butt moved to Svebølle B&I in 2015 and later returned to Brønshøj the next season. After a short stint at Fredensborg BI in 2017, he signed for Herlev IF. He transferred to Greve Fodbold in 2018 to play alongside national teammate Muhammad Ali. Later that year, he moved to AB Tårnby to join fellow international striker Hassan Bashir.
In 2021, Butt joined the Denmark Series club Ishøj IF. He served as a key player for the team and secured promotion to the Danish 3rd Division during that same season. Ishøj announced his departure in January 2024 along with seven other players. He moved to Tårnby FF in the summer of 2024 and then transferred to Karlslunde in the winter window of 2025.

International career
Butt was first called up to the Pakistan national under-23 team in January 2011 for the 2012 Summer Olympics qualifiers under Tariq Lutfi. He had previously been selected for the 2010 Asian Games, but the Pakistan Football Federation stopped his participation due to alleged late document submission. He purchased a non-refundable air ticket for the event but received no compensation from the federation.
He made his Olympic qualifying debut as a starter against Malaysia, where he conceded two goals in the first half before being replaced by Muhammad Omar. His senior debut occurred in November 2012 against Singapore when he entered the match as a replacement for captain Jaffar Khan. He served as the primary goalkeeper for Pakistan during the 2013 SAFF Championship, the 2013 Philippine Peace Cup, and the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers.
After being omitted from the squad for the 2014 Asian Games and the 2015 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers, he returned to the team after almost 5 years. He was the starting goalkeeper in the 2018 SAFF Championship, where he earned the nickname "Safe Hands" for making the most saves until the semi-finals. He also made 2 appearances for the Panjab football team during the 2018 CONIFA World Football Cup.
Following a period of inactivity caused by a FIFA ban on the Pakistan Football Federation, Butt earned his first cap as national captain at the 2023 Mauritius Four Nations Cup. On 17 October 2023, he captained Pakistan in a home debut in Islamabad against Cambodia. This 1–0 victory marked Pakistan's first ever win in a World Cup qualifying match and allowed them to progress to the second round.
