Early life and education

Essa was born on 20 November 1983 in Chaman, which is located in the Balochistan province of Pakistan. He began his football journey with the youth team of Afghan FC Chaman. This local club provided the foundation for his professional career.

Career

He signed for PTCL and won the PFF President's Cup in 2003. During the inaugural Pakistan Premier League season in 2004, his club finished fifth in the league table. In June 2005, East Bengal FC offered him a contract following his performances against India. The deal collapsed because the club chose to retain Bhaichung Bhutia and due to Essa's wage demands.

Essa later returned to Afghan FC Chaman for the 2005 season. His goals helped the team secure fourth place in the table. He then transferred to WAPDA, but they finished second to Pakistan Army instead of winning the title. In the 2007–08 season, he moved to Khan Research Laboratories and helped them achieve a third-place finish.

He also captained Quetta Zorawar in the Super Football League during 2007. Although his team lost in the semi-final, he won the SFL 2007 Player of the Tournament trophy. In 2009, he joined K-Electric to serve as a player and assistant coach. He helped the team win the 2010 Super Football League for Karachi Energy by beating Quetta Zorawar 1–0.

His international career began at the under-16 level in 1995. After being discovered by manager John Layton in 1999, he joined the senior national team. He won gold medals at the 2004 and 2006 South Asian Games while playing for the U-23 side. In 2004, he was named both top scorer and player of the tournament.

Essa scored his first senior international goal via a free-kick against India in 2005. He later scored again during a 3–0 victory against India at Punjab Stadium. He captained the side during the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup qualification campaign. However, he retired from the national team during the 2009 SAFF Championship after a fallout with manager György Kottán.

As a manager, he attained an AFC B coaching license while working at K-Electric. He served as an assistant coach for the Pakistan national team in 2018. He later returned to K-Electric as head coach until the club disbanded in 2020. He joined KRL as head coach in January 2023.

In 2025, he was appointed assistant coach for the Pakistan under-17 team for the SAFF U-17 Championship. He also takes on the role of head coach for Pakistan U16 in 2026. These roles prepare him for the UEFA Under-16 Development Tournament.

Personal life

Football runs deep within his family. His two brothers and two uncles all played in the domestic circuit. His older brother, Ahmad Shah, played at the national level, while his younger brother, Jahangir Khan, represented the under-19 national team. His cousin, Kaleemullah Khan, is also a member of the Pakistan national team.

In 2009, he established the Essa Khan Academy in his hometown of Chaman. He is also a co-founder of the Pak Afghan Clearing Agency. This organization functions as a hybrid between a football club and a department.
