Adnan Farooq Ahmed is a former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He represented the Pakistan national team during a six-year international career where he earned 27 caps and scored 4 goals. His professional football journey spanned 11 years across various clubs in England, Hungary, and Iran.
Early life and education
Ahmed was born in Burnley on 7 June 1984. He grew up in Barnoldswick, Lancashire, and attended Moorland School in Clitheroe. As a British Asian of Pakistani descent, his family originates from Gujrat in Pakistan.
Career
The midfielder began his development within the Bury youth academy before moving to the Manchester United Academy for a two-year period. He eventually turned professional with Huddersfield Town in 2003. Although he made several appearances in league and cup competitions, persistent injuries hampered his progress at the club. On 1 January 2007, he became the first player to be sent off at the Keepmoat Stadium following a two-footed challenge on Mark McCammon.
After being released by Huddersfield in May 2007, Ahmed joined Tranmere Rovers on a free transfer. He made his debut as a substitute during a 1–1 draw against Yeovil Town on 1 September 2007. Due to limited first-team opportunities, he went on loan to Mansfield Town in October 2008. He scored a penalty against Salisbury City and a diving header against Weymouth while playing for the club.
Ahmed also experienced a loan spell with Port Vale in early 2009. He scored the winning goal in a 2–0 victory over Macclesfield Town on 25 February 2009. In July 2009, he signed a two-year contract with the Hungarian club Ferencvárosi TC. He played 20 games for the team and scored 1 goal during the 2009–10 season.
Following his time in Hungary, Ahmed moved to Iran in September 2010. He signed a one-year contract with the Mashhad-based club Aboumoslem for the 2010–11 Azadegan League season. After playing 5 games, he left the side and returned to England as a free agent in early 2011.
His return to English football included a stint with Bradford Park Avenue in October 2011. He scored a stoppage-time winner on his debut against Chester on 2 November. After joining Nelson in May 2012, he had a brief spell with Droylsden before rejoining Nelson in November 2013. He eventually returned to Nelson again in January 2016 while working as an operating director for his father's furniture company.
Ahmed debuted for the Pakistan national team on 22 October 2007 against Iraq in Lahore. He scored his first international goal during a 7–1 loss to Sri Lanka in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup qualification. During the 2008 SAFF Cup, he scored a goal against India in a 2–1 defeat. He recorded two more goals in 2010 during matches against Taiwan and Brunei.
Personal life
Following his retirement from professional football, Ahmed established a football academy. He founded this institution alongside Nathan Ellington.
Awards and recognition
Ahmed won the North West Counties Football League Division One title with Nelson during the 2013–14 season.
