Abdullah Iqbal

Abdullah Iqbal is a professional footballer who plays as a defender for the Swedish Allsvenskan club Mjällby. He serves as the captain of the Pakistan national team and is recognized as one of the premier centre backs in his country.
Early life and education
Iqbal was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 27 July 2002. His family originates from the city of Kharian in Pakistan.
Career
The player began his footballing journey at the age of seven when he joined the youth academy of B.93. He remained with the club until he was 14 years old, though he did leave for one year to join Brøndby IF. After his time with the Superliga team ended, he returned to B.93 where he eventually captained the under-19 side.
Iqbal moved into the first team in 2021 and made his debut during a 2–1 victory over Brabrand IF. He was part of the squad that nearly achieved promotion to the 1st Division in 2022. During the following season, he scored the opening goal in a 2–1 away win against Esbjerg to secure promotion to the 1st Division.
In the 2023–24 Danish 1st Division, he played 17 games out of 21 total appearances for the club while managing international duties. He primarily occupied the central defence position, though he occasionally played as a left back. After helping the team avoid relegation during the relegation round, he was named player of the year on 1 June 2024.
On 8 August 2024, Mjällby signed him for €200,000 until the 2028 season. He joined the Swedish side as a replacement for centre-back Colin Rösler. During the 2025 season, he became a vital part of the defense that helped Mjällby win its first Allsvenskan title.
Iqbal received his first senior international call-up on 16 November 2022 for a friendly against Nepal. He debuted in a match that resulted in a 0–1 defeat. In June, he represented Pakistan in the Mauritius Four Nation Cup and later competed in the 2023 SAFF Championship. He also played for the Pakistan U23 side during the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers in October 2023.
The defender took on the captaincy of the senior national team in June 2024. He led the squad during the second round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against Tajikistan and Saudi Arabia. Standing at 1.92 metres, he uses his physical strength and aerial dominance to control matches.

Iqbal is of Pakistani descent. His family roots are located in Kharian.
Awards and recognition
He achieved the status of Danish 2nd Division runner-up with B.93 in the 2022–23 season. Mjällby won the Allsvenskan title in 2025 and the Svenska Cupen in the 2025–26 season. Additionally, he won the Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament with Pakistan in 2026.
