Nayyara Noor
singer, playback singer
Nayyara Noor is a renowned Pakistani playback singer who remains one of the most popular vocalists in the country. She gained widespread fame through her live ghazal performances on television shows and in concert halls across the nation.
Early life and education
Nayyara Noor was born on 3 November 1950 in Guwahati, Assam. Her family roots trace back to Amritsar, Punjab, where her ancestors belonged to a merchant class. Because her father was an active member of the All-India Muslim League, he hosted Muhammad Ali Jinnah during his trip to Assam before the Partition of India in 1947.
The family migrated from India to Karachi, Pakistan, between 1957 and 1958. While Noor and her mother settled in the new country, her father remained in Assam until 1993 to manage immovable properties. During her childhood, she reportedly drew inspiration from the bhajans of Kanan Devi and Kamla. She also listened to the ghazals and thumris performed by Begum Akhtar.
Career
Noor lacked formal musical training or a professional background in music. Her talent was discovered in 1968 at the National College of Arts in Lahore when Professor Asrar Ahmad heard her sing "Jo tum todo piya" from the film Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje. This discovery led to her performing for Radio Pakistan programs shortly after the event.
She made her public singing debut in Pakistani television serials in 1971. Her film career began with productions such as Gharana in 1973 and Tansen. She frequently performed Urdu poetry by legendary poets like Ghalib and Faiz Ahmad Faiz. These performances often occurred alongside legends such as Mehdi Hassan or Ahmed Rushdi.
One of her most famous recordings is the ghazal "Ae Jazba-e-Dil Gar Main Chahoon," which was written by Behzad Lucknavi. She performed at various mehfils and mushairas to build a following in both Pakistan and India. In 2012, Noor officially announced that she would no longer sing professionally. She stated that music was a passion rather than her top priority, as she viewed her roles as a wife and mother as more central to her life.
Personal life
Noor was married to Shehryar Zaidi. The couple had two sons who also pursued musical paths. Her younger son, Jaffer Zaidi, serves as the lead vocalist for the Kaavish music band. Her elder son, Naad-e-Ali, has begun a career as a solo singer.
She passed away in Karachi on 20 August 2022 at the age of 71. Her death followed a brief illness.
Awards and recognition
The singer received three Gold Medal Awards during the annual All Pakistan Music Conference concerts. She was also a recipient of the Nigar Awards and the Pride of Performance Awards. These honors recognized her significant contributions to the Pakistani music industry.
