Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan
musician, singer, storyteller
Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan is a Pakistani musician who specialized in playing the harmonium for Qawwali music. He belonged to the Qawwal Bacchon ka gharana, which is also known as the Delhi gharana.
Early life and education
Born on 25 December 1952, Farrukh was a member of a prominent family of Qawwali musicians. He was the son of Fateh Ali Khan and the nephew of Mubarak Ali Khan. After the death of his father, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan took over the leadership of the family qawwali party in 1964. Farrukh studied various aspects of music under the tutelage of his older brother, Nusrat. He focused specifically on mastering the harmonium during these instructional years.
His early training prepared him for a lifetime of professional performance.
Career
Farrukh initially performed sporadically with Nusrat before he joined the qawwali party as a permanent member in 1971. Alongside Dildar Hussain, he was the only performer who maintained a permanent position in the group from 1971 until Nusrat's death in 1997. He played the lead harmonium and provided vocals to accompany the main singer. While his talent often went unrecognized because he worked in the shadow of Nusrat, he possessed a wealth of musical knowledge. He served as a central figure within the group through his virtuosity on the instrument.
His technical skills were exceptional. Farrukh could play the harmonium in all scales and possessed the ability to switch a tune at a moment's notice. He also assisted Nusrat with composing the musical arrangements that the party performed. During his 25 years of membership, he helped bring Qawwali music to international audiences through performances in over 40 countries.
Farrukh continued his career after the passing of his brother in 1997. He remained a member of the party when his son, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, assumed leadership. The group performed differently under Rahat's direction, as they did not maintain the same frequency or configuration used during Nusrat's era. Before his death, Farrukh and Rahat made their Bollywood debut together for the 2003 film Paap.
Personal life
Farrukh was the father of the singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. He was also the younger brother of the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. His life was deeply intertwined with the musical traditions of his lineage. Farrukh died on 9 September 2003.
Awards and recognition
While performing in England alongside Nusrat, he became widely known by the title Harmonium Raja Sahib. This name translates to the King of the Harmonium. His reputation as a master of the instrument grew through his international travels and his ability to support complex musical arrangements.
