Shan Masood

Shan Masood Khan is a Pakistani left-handed batter who represents the Pakistan national cricket team. He has been an active member of the national squad since 2013 and served as the Test captain from 2023 to 2026. Throughout his career, he has held leadership roles for various teams including Karachi Kings, Multan Sultans, Southern Punjab, and Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

Early life and education

Masood was born on 14 October 1989 in Kuwait City. His father worked as a professional banker in Kuwait until the Iraqi invasion and the subsequent Gulf War forced the family to return to Pakistan. They eventually settled in Karachi. His father, Mansoor Masood Khan, played hockey at a provincial level and encouraged his son to pursue cricket. Mansoor later joined the governing board of the Pakistan Cricket Board in 2014.

The family later moved to the United Kingdom. While living there, Masood attended Stamford School in Lincolnshire. He went on to study economics at Durham University. He also completed a distance learning programme in Management and Sports Sciences through Loughborough University.

Career

Masood made his first-class debut during the 2007–08 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy season. Playing for Karachi Whites against Hyderabad, he scored 54 runs. He shared a 154-run opening partnership with Asad Shafiq during that match. In April 2018, he served as the vice-captain of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa squad for the Pakistan Cup. He later captained Southern Punjab for the 2019–20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and leads the Bagh Stallions in the Kashmir Premier League.

His success extended to English county cricket. After playing three first-class matches for Durham University, he signed with Derbyshire for the 2022 season. In April 2022, he scored an unbeaten 201 runs against Sussex to record his maiden first-class double century. He followed this performance by scoring another double century in the next match. This feat made him the first batsman in Derbyshire history to achieve back-to-back double centuries in first-class cricket. In May 2022, he recorded a third century for the club against Worcestershire. He was subsequently appointed captain of Yorkshire County Cricket Club for the 2023 season.

Masood debuted in Test cricket against South Africa in October 2013. He scored 75 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, becoming only the third Pakistan batsman to score a half-century and a duck on Test debut. In July 2015, he achieved his first Test century against Sri Lanka at Pallekele. During that match, he shared a 242-run partnership for the third wicket with Younis Khan. He also contributed to Pakistan completing their highest successful chase. While primarily a batter, he bowled his first Test delivery against England at Old Trafford on 23 July 2016.

His international career includes several milestones in different formats. He made his ODI debut against Australia on 22 March 2019. In December 2019, he scored his second Test century against Sri Lanka in Karachi and reached 1,000 Test runs. He recorded his third Test century against Bangladesh in February 2020. Later, in August 2020, he scored 156 against England at Old Trafford to earn his fourth Test century. He made his T20I debut against England on 20 September 2022 and was selected for the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Masood assumed the role of Pakistan Test captain in November 2023. His tenure included a 3-0 series loss to Australia and a 2-0 home series defeat against Bangladesh. However, he led Pakistan to a 2-1 series victory against England. During that series, he scored his fifth Test century and became the 17th Pakistan captain to score a hundred in the format. He also surpassed the 2,000-run milestone in Tests. In a subsequent series against South Africa, he recorded his sixth Test century during the second match. He stepped down from the captaincy following a 2-0 away series loss to Bangladesh in May 2026.
