Faran Tahir

Faran Haroon Tahir is an American actor who has appeared in numerous films and television series. He maintains a diverse professional portfolio that includes roles in major Hollywood productions and stage performances.

Early life and education

Tahir was born in Los Angeles to Yasmeen Tahir and Naeem Tahir, who works as a writer and an actor. His mother is recognized as one of the most famous voices of Radio Pakistan. Through his maternal lineage, he is the grandson of Hijab Imtiaz Ali, the first Muslim female pilot, and writer Imtiaz Ali Taj. He spent his childhood in Pakistan before he returned to the United States in 1980.

His siblings also work within the entertainment industry. His younger brother Ali Tahir acts in the comedy-drama sitcom Teen Bata Teen, while Mehran Tahir works as a TV producer for Hum TV.

Tahir pursued his higher education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied business economics. He eventually transitioned into the performing arts and earned a degree in theatre. He later completed an MFA from the American Repertory Theater's Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University.

Career

Tahir made his film debut in 1994 when he played Nathoo in Disney's live-action version of The Jungle Book. Following this debut, he appeared in Picture Perfect in 1997 and Anywhere But Here in 1999. He also took the male lead role in the 1999 independent film ABCD.

His work in major studio films includes several prominent roles. In 2008, he portrayed the villain Raza in the Marvel Comics film Iron Man. He then played Starfleet Captain Richard Robau in the 2009 film Star Trek and appeared as President Patel in the 2013 science-fiction movie Elysium.

The actor has a vast television history spanning many different genres. He guest starred on series such as Alias, NYPD Blue, Lost, and 24. His credits include roles in the medical drama Grey's Anatomy and the CW series Supernatural, where he played the Egyptian god Osiris. He appeared in the pilot episodes of NCIS through his work on JAG, and he later appeared in the spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles seven years later.

Tahir has also worked extensively on television dramas and genre shows. In 2015, he played the Commander on Supergirl, and he joined American Crime as Rhys Bashir in 2016. He was cast as Captain Nemo on Once Upon a Time and portrayed Mallick in the Syfy series 12 Monkeys in 2017.

His stage career includes a significant performance in 2016. He played the title role of Othello for the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. During a visit to Karachi in January 2019, he appeared in the web series Speak Your Heart With Samina Peerzada.

In June 2024, Tahir appeared in a vlog by PakWheels alongside his Umrao Ayyar co-star Ali Kazmi. He continues to be active in various media formats.

Personal life

Tahir married Zara Tareen, who is a photographer, actor, and model, in 2021. Their marriage lasted for four months. The divorce was finalized in 2023.
