cricketer
Asif Ali is a former Pakistani cricketer who represented his country on the international stage. He played first-class cricket for Northern and appeared for the Lahore Qalandars during the Pakistan Super League.
Early life and education
Asif Ali was born on 1 October 1991, in Faisalabad, Pakistan. Before he entered the world of professional cricket, he worked as a labourer in an iron foundry. This manual labor preceded his rise as a recognized athlete.
Career
Misbah-ul-Haq played an instrumental role in the development of Ali as a cricketer. He initially selected Ali as a power-hitter during the 2011 Super 8 Twenty20 Cup while serving as the captain of the Faisalabad cricket team. Ali became the leading run-scorer for Faisalabad in the 2017–18 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, where he recorded 369 runs across six matches.
He participated in several global T20 leagues throughout his career. After playing for the Pokhara Rhinos in the 2017 Everest Premier League, he joined the Edmonton Royals for the inaugural Global T20 Canada tournament on 3 June 2018. He also represented the Cape Town Blitz in the 2018 and 2019 editions of the Mzansi Super League T20. His franchise experience continued when he joined the Dhaka Platoon in November 2019 and the Jamaica Tallawahs in July 2020.
Domestic cricket saw Ali representing various regional sides. In April 2018, he joined Punjab's squad for the 2018 Pakistan Cup and scored 328 runs in four matches. He later played for Sindh in the 2019 Pakistan Cup and appeared for Northern during the 2019–20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. Following his time with the Jaffna Stallions in the 2020 Lanka Premier League, he was signed by Islamabad United for the 2022 Pakistan Super League. He also played for the Colombo Stars in 2022 and the Hobart Hurricanes for BBL 12.
Ali began his international career with Pakistan in 2018. He made his T20I debut against the West Indies on 1 April 2018, and he debuted in ODIs against Zimbabwe on 13 July 2018. Although he was named in the 2019 Cricket World Cup squad, he struggled to maintain a consistent presence in the national team during his first three years. He eventually announced his retirement from international cricket on 1 September 2025.
The 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup served as a turning point for his reputation. Although many critics and former cricketers questioned his selection for the squad, he scored vital runs against Afghanistan and New Zealand. He earned a man of the match award after scoring an unbeaten 25 runs from 7 balls against Afghanistan. During the 2022 Asia Cup, he was involved in a heated exchange with Fareed Ahmad. Consequently, he was fined 25% of his match fees on 8 September 2022 for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
Awards and recognition
The Pakistan Cricket Board awarded Ali a central contract for the 2018–19 season as one of thirty-three players. He received the Player of the Month award in November 2021 due to his performances during the T20 World Cup.
