Quratulain Balouch is a Pakistani American singer-songwriter who has gained significant recognition in the South Asian music industry. Often referred to as the "Humsafar Girl," she rose to prominence through her emotive vocal performances on television soundtracks and platforms like Coke Studio. Her musical journey transitioned from an impromptu discovery to a professional career that spans both Pakistani and Bollywood productions.

Early life and education

Balouch was born on 4 March 1988 in Aradan to a Persian father and a Punjabi mother from Pakistan. She was originally named Shaheera, but her parents renamed her Quratulain when she was two years old. Her early schooling took place in Multan at Kehkashan Army Public School (KAPS). During these formative years, she demonstrated significant musical talent.

She later moved to the United States around the age of 18. While living abroad, she earned a Bachelor's degree in IT Essentials Multimedia. She returned to Pakistan in 2011 after five years in the USA. Upon her return, she worked for an NGO providing relief services in Azad Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Career

Balouch possesses no formal classical music training. Instead, she grew up inspired by Sufi musicians such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen, Pathanay Khan, and Muhammad Juman. Her professional career began in 2011 with a cover of Reshma's "Ankhian Nu Ren De." This performance served as the initial catalyst for her entry into the music industry.

She achieved widespread fame through her appearance on season 4 of Coke Studio. Her collaboration with the band Jal on the song "Panchi" significantly raised her public profile. Shortly after, she performed the title track "Woh Humsafar Tha" for the Hum TV drama serial Humsafar. This performance became a defining moment in her career.

In 2012, she represented Pakistan during a live performance with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. She has since collaborated with several notable artists, including Saad Sultan, Khawar Jawad, and Goher Mumtaz. Her reach extended to Bollywood in 2016 when she debuted with the song "Kaari Kaari" for the film Pink. Currently, she is based in Lahore.

Personal life

Balouch finds spiritual inspiration in Sufism, which informs much of her musical style. She has expressed complex views on feminism, stating that she values women who take active steps toward their beliefs. Regarding her nickname, she has noted a dislike for being called "QB" due to its similarity to the initials of Qandeel Baloch.

Her resilience was tested during a trip to assist victims of the 2025 Pakistan floods in Gilgit Baltistan. On 5 September 2025, she was injured during a bear attack while camping. She also survived a previous car accident. Balouch views these life-threatening experiences as motivations that have made her more resilient.
