Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid Chaudhry Pervez Elahi. Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi (born November 1, 1945) is the Chief Minister of Pakistan’s most populous province, Punjab, since November 29, 2002.
History and Background
Chaudhry Pervez Elahi is one of the prominent politicians of Pakistan. He joined politics in 1967. Ch. Pervez Elahi has served as Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. He also served as Speaker Punjab Assembly, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Deputy Opposition Leader Punjab Assembly, Chairman District Council of Gujrat. Now he is Opposition Leader of PMLQ in National Assembly and also President of PML-Q (Punjab).
Sometimes his name is also written as Chaudhary Pervaiz Ellahi.
He is son of Chaudhry Manzoor Elahi (Brother of Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi). He is Cousin and Brother-in-Law of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain (President of PMLQ and Ex. PM of Pakistan). He belongs to ruler clan Jatt Warraich.
Chaudhry Pervez Elahi and Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain are commonly known as Chaudhry Brothers.
Chaudhry Moonis Elahi is son of Ch. Pervez Elahi. He is political descendant of Chaudhry Family.
Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi is a son of late Pakistani politician, Chaudhry Manzoor Elahi. He is from a political and business family, commonly referred to as Chaudhrys of Gujrat.His cousin and brother-in-law, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from May to August 2004.
Chief Minister Punjab
His notable political achievements includes reforms in the education sector which lead to literacy rate increasing from 47 percent in 2002, to 62 percent in 2007 in the province. It included free Education in public schools up to Metric, free Distribution of 28 million books in all public schools, stipend for 11 lac girls in 15 low literacy districts, provision of 118276 missing facilities in 63882 schools, 50000 graduate teachers recruited and 275 schools upgraded/established and teacher’s training for 122087 teachers in 2007/08.
These steps were endorsed and appreciated by various donor agencies such as World Bank. His other notable achievement include setting up Pervaiz Elahi Institute of Cardiology in Multan, University of Gujrat in Gujrat, Traffic Wardens system in Lahore, Rescue 1122 service in Punjab, water course brick lining and Lahore Ring Road Project.
Early Years
He become chairman of the Gujrat district council in 1983; and has been serving as a MPA (Member of the Provincial Assembly) of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab since 1985.
He served as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development during 1985-88, 1988-90 and 1990-93. He was Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly during 1993-96, and also the Leader of the Opposition later. He was the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly during 1997-99.
In Power
In elections of 2002, he was elected for a sixth consecutive term from two constituencies – PP-110 (Gujrat) & PP-292 (Rahim Yar Khan). Since November 29, 2002, he is the Chief Minister of Punjab.
He is also the President of his political party, Pakistan Muslim League (PML), in Punjab.
Current Status
