Taufeeq Umar

cricketer

Taufeeq Umar is a former Pakistani cricketer who represented his national team between 2001 and 2014. He primarily served as a Test opening batsman during his international tenure.

Early life and education

Taufeeq Umar was born on 20 June 1981 in Lahore. While specific details regarding his schooling are not documented, he emerged from the local cricket landscape to reach the highest level of the sport. He eventually became a prominent figure in Pakistani domestic competitions.

Career

Umar began his international journey in 2001. Although he played for the Pakistan national team for many years, he actually played more Test matches than One Day Internationals (ODIs). He did not receive a prolonged run in the ODI side until 2003, which was the year he played 8 ODIs in a row.

His early Test career showed significant promise. Between August 2001 and April 2004, he missed only 2 of the 24 Tests that Pakistan played. After completing 17 Tests, his batting average reached 48.03 following four scores above 50 during a series against South Africa. He displayed an ability to concentrate for long periods—a trait that distinguished him from other Pakistani openers.

His technical skills included exquisite drives on either side of the wicket. He also utilized a formidable cut and pull shot to navigate attacks. During the 2003 tour of South Africa, his timing made him a vital asset against a full strength bowling attack. However, a loss of form against India in 2004 caused him to lose his place in the squad.

Umar returned to the national side for the 2010 South Africa series. This comeback included strong performances, such as a century against the West Indies. He later recorded a brilliant double hundred against Sri Lanka in the UAE. He remained a regular Test opener until he was dropped after the 2012 series against Sri Lanka.

His final appearance for Pakistan occurred in 2014 against New Zealand. He scored 16 and 4 in his two innings during that single Test match. Following this performance, he was dropped from the squad once more.

In domestic cricket, Umar represented Lahore Ravi and Habib Bank Limited. He played for Pakistan A against a touring England XI during the 2005–06 season. His career faced a brief disruption in 2008 when he joined the rebel Indian Cricket League. During this period, he represented the Lahore Badshahs and received a temporary ban from Pakistani domestic cricket.

He also spent time in the United Kingdom. While there, he played Professional League cricket for Lancaster Cricket Club in the Northern League.

Personal life

Umar faced a health challenge in 2020. On 23 May 2020, he tested positive for COVID-19. He recovered successfully by June 2020.
