Early life
She started learning Khayal from her sister Mukhtar Begum at age seven and later learnt classical music from Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan. Her sister Mukhtar Begum would take her, a seven-year-old Farida, to Khan’s place for riyaaz. She migrated to Pakistan after partition of India in 1947.Farida Khanum also know as Malika-e-Ghazal, is a renowned Pakistani Ghazal singer from Punjab. Farida Khanum has been given the title “Malika-e-Ghazal” (Queen of Ghazal) in tribute to her singing talents. The ghazal she is most famously associated with is “Aaj Jaane Ki Zidd Naa Karo”
Career
Farida Khanum gave her first public concert in 1950 and then joined Radio Pakistan where she courted fame and fortune.She became a star when Pakistan’s president Ayub Khan invited her to a public recital in the ’60s.

Personal life
Farida Khanum lives in Lahore, Pakistan. She has 1 son and 5 daughters. She lives with her second oldest daughter, and her only son, his wife and kids. One of her daughters lives with her husband and kids in New York, One of her daughters lives in Canada. Her youngest daughter is a specialist in endocrinology currently working in Services Hospital,Lahore and lives with her husband and kids.
In 2005, she was awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s highest civilian honour by President Pervez Musharraf.

Farida Khanum performed in Delhi
The famous singer of Pakistan Farida Khanum was in New Delhi on Tuesday and she said she spent her childhood in Banaras and Kolkata, and she could not forget these cities .She said India is her first home – “her mayeka” and she misses Banaras very much in Pakistan. Khanum was wearing a saree during the function and she said the saree was presented by Lata Mangeshkar with whom she dreams to sing one day.

Farida Khanum, the Pakistan-based ghazal exponent who enthralled audiences recently at the Aravalli Concert, paid her tribute to singer Lata Mangeshkar. She revealed that Lataji is one of the artistes who has inspired her to a great deal and is also really sweet. She stated that she has performed with a number of Indian musicians and Lataji was also one of them.
Khanum spoke about how much love she had received in India and that she wouldn’t mind living here if she was invited. She believes that both countries have so much in their musical legacies that it could bridge any kind of gap.
She revealed that she performed with Mukhtar Begum in Kolkata before the latter moved to Mumbai. It was also around the same time that she met Begum Akhtar, that Akhtar encouraged her to grow. She also reveals that Akhtar was never jealous and that’s how it used to be back in their time. Khanum performed some memorable ghazals, which included her famous track, Aaj jaane ki zid na karo…
