Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah

Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah is a Pakistani politician and lawyer. He currently serves as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan. Representing the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), he holds significant influence within the country's legislative framework.

Early life and education

Shah was born in Sukkur on April 20, 1952. He attended Government Islamia Science College in Sukkur for his early schooling. His academic journey continued at Islamia College, Sukkur, where he pursued higher studies. He earned a master's degree in History in 1974. Later, he obtained his LL.B in 1978.

His involvement in student leadership began during his college years. He served as the President of the Student Union at MAS Arts College, Sukkur in 1971. He held the same position at Islamia Post Graduate College, Sukkur in 1975. By 1977, he became the President of the Student Union at MAS Law College, Sukkur.

Career

Shah entered provincial politics in 1988 as a member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh. He represented a Sukkur constituency on a PPP ticket. During his tenure in the Sindh provincial cabinet, he managed several portfolios. These included Education, Transport, Import, Finance and Information.

His transition to federal politics occurred when he was elected to the National Assembly in 1990. He secured his second term as an MNA in 1993. During Benazir Bhutto's second ministry, he served as the Federal Minister for Education. He was re-elected to the National Assembly in 1997 and again in 2002.

In 2008, Shah won his fifth term from a Sukkur constituency. He joined the federal cabinet as the Minister for Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis from March 2008 to May 2011. After the ministry was divided in 2009, he continued as the Minister for Labour and Manpower. He also held the additional portfolio of Minister for Religious Affairs from December 2010 to 2013.

Shah served as the parliamentarian leader of the PPP in the National Assembly between 2008 and 2013. In 2012, he acted as the chairman of the parliamentary committee regarding the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner. He was re-elected to the National Assembly for a sixth time in 2013. During this period, the PPP appointed him as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.

He secured his seat again in 2018 from NA-206 (Sukkur-I). The PPP nominated him for Speaker of the National Assembly, but he received 146 votes against Asad Qaiser's 176 votes. In the 2024 general elections, Shah won his most recent seat in NA-201 Sukkur-II. He obtained 121,566 votes to defeat Muhammad Saleh Indhar of the JUI(F).

Legal challenges also marked his career. On September 18, 2019, the National Accountability Bureau arrested him regarding alleged assets beyond means. He was later released on bail by the Supreme Court on October 21, 2021.

Personal life

Shah is a professional lawyer and a businessman. He is married and has a family consisting of two sons and three daughters. His personal interests include listening to music and playing cricket. He has traveled extensively to various countries, including France, Russia and Thailand.
