Balakh Sher Mazari

Sardar Mir Balakh Sher Mazari was a Pakistani politician who held the position of Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan. He served as the paramount sardar and tumandar of the Mazari tribe. His leadership spanned the tristate area where Balochistan, Sindh, and Punjab provinces meet.

Early life and education

Balakh Sher Mazari was born on 8 July 1928 in Kot Karam Khan. He belonged to a prominent lineage that held significant influence over tribal territories. As a member of the Mazari tribe, he eventually became the 22nd Sardar and the 7th Mir of his people.

Career

Mazari entered the highest levels of Pakistani governance during a period of intense political instability. On 19 April 1993, President Ghulam Ishaq Khan utilized powers granted by the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan. This action dismissed the government led by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and dissolved both national and provincial assemblies. Following this dismissal, the President appointed Mazari as the Caretaker Prime Minister.

His role required him to lead the government for a mandatory 90 days. This period was intended to establish a stable framework before the next general elections could occur. Mazari scheduled these elections to take place on 14 July 1993. However, his tenure did not reach its full planned duration. On 26 May 1993, the Supreme Court revoked the presidential order that had initiated his appointment. This ruling resulted in the reinstatement of Nawaz Sharif as the prime minister.

Beyond his federal role, Mazari remained a powerful figure due to his status as one of the largest landholders in Pakistan. He maintained authority over the Mazari tribe through his traditional titles of Tumandar or Sardar. His political influence extended through his family members who participated in various electoral processes.

Personal life

Mazari was part of a politically active family. His brother, Sherbaz Khan Mazari, also participated in the politics of Pakistan. The family legacy continued through several generations of leadership and parliamentary service.

His son, Sardar Riaz Mehmood Khan Mazari, won a seat in the National Assembly of Pakistan. He ran as a candidate for the Tehreek-e-Insaf party during the 2018 general election from constituency NA-195. The family's political presence reached a third generation through his grandson, Mir Dost Mohammad Mazari. This grandson served as a parliamentarian for the Pakistan People's Party in NA-175 and held the position of parliamentary secretary for the Ministry of Water and Power.

Mazari passed away on 4 November 2022. He was 94 years old at the time of his death.
