Federal Minister for States and Frontier Regions Najamuddin Khan was born on January 1, 1954 in Dir Town (Dir Upper).

Political career
Najamuddin Khan hails from a political family. He did his graduation from Karachi University in 2002.In his long political career, spreading over three decades, he has been an active political worker right from young age. He was elected Chairman of Union Council Dir in 1979 and Member of National assembly in 1988. Twice he has been elected as MPA of NWFP.

In recognition of his meritorious services to the party, he was appointed Provincial Secretary General of PPP by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto in 1989 and still holding such important assignment.
Provincial General Secretary of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Najamuddin Khan is the first politician from twin districts of Dir to become a federal minister of Pakistan.

The two districts had representation in the provincial cabinet in the past but no politician from the area ever made it to the federal cabinet. PPP provincial general secretary for the last 10 years, Najamuddin remained with the party through thick and thin and never betrayed it, which earned him the current slot.

Najamuddin won in NA-33 (Dir Upper) and PF-91 (Dir Upper-I). The party asked him to vacate the provincial assembly seat and retain the National Assembly seat to keep the numerical strength intact. Acting in line with the party wishes, the tripartite government headed by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani named him the federal minister for Frontier Regions.

Inducting him in the federal cabinet was not an insignificant event for the people of Dir, as it was the first time in the history of Dir Lower and Upper that any politician from the region was appointed a federal minister. His father, Amanullah Khan, Malik Jehanzeb Khan of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Inayatullah of Jamaat-e-Islami also remained provincial ministers.

The decision to appoint Najamuddin triggered jubilation among the residents of the district, particularly among PPP workers. Overjoyed activists distributed sweets in parts of the district, including the district headquarters Dir while some supporters reportedly resorted to festive firing.

Addressing the delighted workers in Bibyawar, PPP district chapter president Anwar Khan, Bibyawar union nazim Bakht Zada, Masihullah and others said the State of Dir was integrated into Pakistan in 1969 and political process started in 1970 but since then no legislator from Dir was inducted in the federal cabinet. It was, they added, the government of PPP that gave representation to the backward and ignored district in the federal government.

A senior member of the party, Muhammad Rashid, said: “PPP always worked for the development of Dir and Najamuddin will hopefully also work for the prosperity of the district,” he said.

However, some people are of the opinion that the ministry assigned to him is insignificant, and he would not be able to live up to the expectations of people. “It is not insignificant that we have been given representation in the federal cabinet for the first time in the history of Dir. The PPP Dir Upper thanks the party for this,” said PPP provincial council member, Nizamuddin. He said that Najamuddin has plans to provide natural gas to Dir, improve education and provide jobs to the unemployed youth.

Najamuddin was elected member of the National Assembly in 1990 for the first time and member of the provincial assembly in the by-election in 1996. He retained his seat in the general elections in February 1997. However, it was an interesting coincidence that whenever his party came into power, he lost election. It is the first time that his party won most of the seats in the centre and he too has made it to the assembly.
